Backcountry Inshore vs Coastal Nearshore

For our shorter "half-day" Hilton Head fishing charters on A Lɪᴠᴇ Oɴᴇ you can choose from Backcountry (Inshore) or Coastal (Ocean Nearshore) fishing locations. The inshore waters include the salt marsh tidal creeks, rivers, sounds (“bays”), and the coastal waters extend several miles into the ocean. We can opt for calmer waters inshore as appropriate, and often stay within sight of land on the shorter half-day trips even if we're on the ocean side.

Summer + Inshore = Sharks

During summer, it's important to note that most of the backcountry action is sharks. Yes, we do catch other types of fish inshore, but sharks are often first to the hook and should be expected as a likely catch. The same natural baits and techniques we use to target fish like cobia, redfish, or tarpon are the same prey that appeal to sharks. We're fortunate to have a large population of small and mid-sized sharks that provide consistent action and excitement.

Coastal Reefs & Wrecks = Variety

For anglers looking to fish for "something other than sharks", we do have options in the coastal range. Head out on the ocean, and troll artificial lures or live bait, for fish that frequent the coastal waters like spanish mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, and an occasional barracuda, cobia, or king mackerel. While some of these fish do sometimes visit inshore, the best opportunity for targeting them means being in the right place at the right time, and that's usually on the ocean side. For bigger sportfish and game fish like 'cudas, cobia, and kings, you can expect a significant increase in success a bit further out, so if you have your heart set on big fish like that, it's really worth your while to do a longer trip that gives us the most options. This "half-day" reservation starts at 5 ʜʀs and with options to extend to 6 or 8 ʜʀs for more fishing. We have other 6+ ʜʀ trips that run further offshore located here.
